Forestry is an art and a science--as well as a combination of both. Everyone knows that one errant stroke of the artist's brush or strike of the sculptor's mallet can ruin a work of art. As humans began adding their own bush strokes and mallet blows to the forested landscape, unforeseen and unwanted results often occurred such as habitat and species reduction and rampant erosion. Then, in many cases, we applied the "science" of forestry and wildlife management to solve these problems. In our zeal, we wound up with newer, more challenging problems such as deer and beaver overpopulation, kudzu, privit and other non-native, exotic flora. Today, there is no avoiding these problems. But we know that the proper use of the science of forestry, applied with a painters' eye and a steady sculptor's hand, can assist with the alleviation of nuisances we face in the Human/Wildland or Urban/Forested interface. The Forest Resources branch of Deer Proof, Inc. is dedicated to practicing sound and ethical forestry practices, including total or selective harvests, replanting, herbaceous and woody control, prescribed burning and other silvicultural procedures, all of which can be utilized to change, remove or re-establish habitat ecology or to accomplish nuisance control, abatement, or removal. Moreover, by using sound forest management, the professional staff of Deer Proof, Inc. can achieve the desired short-term goal of wildlife habitat improvement, but will not overlook the long-term objective every Forest Manager and Landowner should have which is the present and future protection of the land. |
